US College Soccer to Professional Football: Why more players are taking the US route

Nathan Opoku is the name on everybody's lips at the moment, with the College Soccer star having made a dream move to Premier League club Leicester City FC. We take a look at the ever growing line of talent using US College Soccer as a route to the Professional game and how more and more players are making the jump from College in the USA to Professional Football.


US College Soccer's format is such that it's players are considered Amateur, yet the level of competition and talent, and the rigorous training schedules, rival those of even Professional clubs. As such the USA has seen an increasing number of players making the jump to Professional Football across the world. More and more young players are choosing the College route as a means of getting into Professional Football, not only as it allows player's the opportunity to continue their studies whilst playing and training everyday at a high level, but as it gives them the opportunity to develop and mature as players in a competitive environment that see's top talent from across the globe converge on US soil.

Nathan Opoku is the most recent example of player's that have made it Professional via College Soccer in the USA, and his story is one of the most exciting. The Ghanaian native began his Collegiate career at NAIA program Lindsay Wilson in 2021 where he made an instant impact, scoring 19 goals in 19 games. His top performances helped him to transfer to NCAA Division 1 powerhouse Syracuse, where he was a key factor in their 2022 College Cup success, the first in school history, racking up 11 Goals and 8 Assists, including a goal in the final. A stellar College career was blossoming for the Ghanaian and he added to his prestige, and his trophy cabinet, by aiding Ventura County Fusion to lift the USL 2 Championship with 11 goals, garnering the MVP title. It was at this point that Leicester City swooped in to secure the young talents signature, beginning the next leg of his incredible journey and fulfilling his boyhood dream of becoming a Professional Footballer.


There is no doubt that the US College system was a major factor in Opoku and other player's development as Footballers that has helped them on the road to becoming Pro players. With player's globally looking for the next step in their careers and options outside of Professional Academy set ups, US College Soccer is providing a strong pathway for young people to continue their development Athletically and Academically.
