Club Spotlight - Nova FC

This week we have a special spotlight post as we focus our feature on a Club rather than a College, so we will be giving you the full run down on Northern Virginia FC (Nova FC).

Who are Nova FC?

Northern Virginia FC, formerly Northern Virginia Royals and Evergreen FC, is an American soccer club known as Nova FC from Leesburg, Virginia. The club currently have teams competing in USL League Two, USL W League, Eastern Premier Soccer League and the Major Arena Soccer League 3.

Northern Virginia FC operates with the mission of creating an environment in which everyone involved from the ground up is an integral part of the club. The club takes great pride in its player-focused approach to development, dedicating time and resources to provide a high quality coaching and training environment to its players.

The club are also present in the Women's game, where previously they were known as the Northern Virginia Majestics, and currently play in the USL W-League, looking to continue their progression after their initial season in 2022 in the reformed women's division.

Founded in 1998, they joined the then Professional League USISL D-3 as an expansion franchise, entering under the name of the Northern Virginia Royals where they competed for 8 years before management decided to take the team in a new direction focusing on future talent development by joining the USL Premier Development League, the top Semi-Professional league for Collegiate talent and International aspiring pro's, in 2006. The then PDL gave a platform for top unsigned players to showcase their talents and compete at the highest level possible whilst maintaining College eligibility, in which Northern Virginia are highly influential having provided a pathway for multiple former Male & Female player's into the pro game, both domestically and abroad.

Notable Nova FC Alumni include; Doug Warren of DC United, New England Revolution & USA National Team. Santino Quaranta of DC United, LA Galaxy & USA National Team. Curt Onaifo of DC United, Kansas City Wizards & US National Olympic Team. United States Women’s National Team member Ali Krieger and former Ghana Women’s National Team members, Alberta Sackey, Elizabeth Baidu, Adjoa Bayor and Basilea Amoah-Tetteh.

Nova FC briefly joined forces with Major League Soccer club D.C. United and formed a joint PDL team called D.C. United U-23 in a brief partnership that combined the talents and expertise of 2 institutions of US Soccer located in the DMV area. The club then built on their relationship with West Ham United in the UK, through then Head Coach Ian Bishop, and reformed as an independent club under the name of Evergreen Hammers which saw them transition alongside the PDL into the USL 2.

Now back under the original banner of Northern Virginia FC, the club's vision for future success & development hasn't changed. With a current crop of talented players that have seen the club finish 3rd in Conference during their 2022 USL 2 campaign and crowned Champions of the EPSL and Major Arena Soccer League 3, Nova FC once again look to across the pond in there search for the best unsigned talent.
